8 Lessons From Bruce Lee That You Should Apply In Your Life

Bruce Lee was born in China. He was a Hong Kong action film actor, martial arts instructor, philosopher, filmmaker, and founder of the fighting style - Jeet Kune Do. He also had a brilliant smile, as you can see above. This guy was a monster when it came to achievement. Excelling at everything he did, Lee was probably one of the most disciplined people to have ever existed. Sadly, he died under mysterious circumstances on July 20th, 1973. Thus, the world lost a figure who advocated the limitless possibilities of the human race.

Thankfully, being a philosopher, Lee did manage to immortalise his thoughts. So we can learn from him and replicate his success, or as the man himself said, 'Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it'. So please, incorporate these principles in your own way.

1. Adapt To Survive

'Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo survives by bending with the wind.'

You'll see that the happiest people are the most adaptable ones. So if you want to be happy, loosen up! Don't try to manipulate your surroundings; go with the flow and live in the moment as much as possible. Accept things as they are, and change what you can. Leave the rest alone, because worrying about things you can't control doesn't solve anything. He also sums this up in his famous 'water' quote. Here's a better illustration.

2. Practice Makes Perfect

'I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 rimes.'

You can't be the best at everything, so stop dabbling in different things and switching goals! Pick something, stick to it, and you'll become a pro at it. Most people give up on an activity because they don't see quick results. Obviously you aren't going to be successful at it if you do that! Lee was always obsessed with the martial arts. He was so good at it because of his dedicated focus and practice. He could do anything he wanted in that field. Check this video out. That weapon doesn't even have a proper flat surface!

3. Watch Your Thoughts

'As you think, so shall you become.'

This is probably Lee's most important quote. Ponder over what you're thinking. Are your thoughts helping you to stay happy and achieve what you want? Or are you thinking about how many 'likes' you're going to get on Facebook? Monitoring your thoughts is the first step to enlightenment and success. Focusing on attaining your goals will help you live a fuller life. George RR Martin, the creator of 'A Game Of Thrones' was always immersed in the world of Westeros, and look at how far he's come.

Not that watch!

4. You Are Limitless

'Using no way as way, using no limitation as limitation.'

No matter how much he achieved, Lee just kept pushing himself harder every time. You can't put a limit on the human soul; it's limitless. He said that there are plateaus you can reach through hard work, but you must never stay there. Surpass them and keep going forward. Putting limits on yourself is dangerous, because it begins to seep into every aspect of your life. You decide what you can and can't do, or be, or think! You decide!

Yes, Bradley Cooper, it's possible without drugs

5. Get Some Action

'Knowing is not enough, you must apply; willing is not enough you must do.'

What Lee meant by the above quote was that there's no use knowing and preparing yourself all the time, if you aren't going to use your knowledge to execute anything. He was so restless that he would even take his weights to the movies and lift while watching. You don't have to do that, but stop waiting for the 'perfect time' to start things; because it doesn't exist. There'll always be something missing, and you'll convince yourself to start later. So just begin already!

There's no way anyone's going to replace that with a dumbbell!

6. Hack Away

'It's not the daily increase, but the daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential.'

Remove all distractions. The lesser you have to focus on, the more you can actually focus. Is it really necessary to spend an hour or two everyday just texting? Figure out what you really want and how you want to live, and slowly remove everything else. 'Simplicity is the key to brilliance' - another quote from Bruce Lee. So simplify your life and eliminate the unnecessary. It's a liberating experience and you'll get a lot more out of your day.

We should hack away this stupid ad from television, if possible

7. Don't Judge!

'Take no thought of who is right or wrong or who is better than. Be not for or against.'

If we want the world to improve, we have to let go of prejudice and judgment. Let everyone say what they want; if you don't like it, do something else. Don't inject negative energy into situations. Be open to lessons from everywhere, irrespective of who delivers them. Prevent yourself from worrying about others, because it's time consuming and useless.

Please don't, judge!

8. The Clock Is Ticking

'If you love life, don't waste time, for time is what life is made up of.'

This doesn't mean you can't chill out, but stop procrastinating, making excuses, and succumbing to fears. When you've decided to do something, accomplish it. Start moving towards your dreams and you'll slowly see that you have more time to do things that you truly want. You can make mistakes along the way; you're human. It'll keep you humble and motivate you to strive for greatness even more. He also said, 'Don't fear failure. Not failure, but low aim is the crime. In great attempts it is glorious even to fail'. So don't be afraid, because you'll learn a lot from failing and it'll help you be successful.

Don't waste time daydreaming, make them come true instead!

Bruce Lee will forever be a legend, and he's the perfect example of why anyone can be super awesome. Discipline and hard work are the key here. Follow his tips, but tweak them to suit yourself; it's a great way to lead a better life.
