Food For Thought: Keep Your Brain Healthy With These Edibles

The human brain is an enigma to us all. We know that it's capable of firing neurons at around 200 times per second, but that doesn't explain why dreams exist, or if reality is all just a state of mind. What we do know, is that the brain is our most valuable asset, and keeping it healthy keeps us fit and alive. So, apart from puzzle solving and playing video games, you can keep your brain in good shape by adding these to your diet.

I'm Not Yolking!

While eggs are high in cholesterol, they're also high in a substance called choline. It's a neurotransmitter involved in helping you remember things, like the location of your car keys. Both cholesterol and choline support the membranes of neurons, keeping them in shape. Cholesterol also forms the building blocks for hormones that influence brain function. So eggs keep your brain in solid form and prevent atrophy (shrinking of the brain).

Hurry, Have Some Curry

Spice, in general, is a brain-nourishing substance. Most curries contain a component called curcumin which is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier. Curcumin is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that keep your brain cool and healthy. The compound even boosts memory and stimulates production of new brain cells. So stock up on curry!

Go Nuts

While the purpose of the article is to prevent this exact thing from occurring, eating nuts is highly beneficial to brain function. The best part is that all nuts are beneficial - walnuts, peanuts, hazelnuts, even donuts (it sucks that the last one isn't true). They are rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, folate, vitamin E, and vitamin B6. All these nutrients make it a lot easier for your brain to think clearly. You'll also have a positive mindset, because omega acids are natural anti-depressants. Oh, and nuts are also brilliant for memory and cognitive function.

Something's Fishy

For all you non-vegetarians out there who don't want to eat nuts, fish is an excellent source of Omega - 3 fatty acids. Your brain loves fat, but your neurons usually get coated with an acidic layer of 'bad' fat that hardens and reduces motion. Fish has a massive amount of Omega 3 that coats your brain in 'good' fat making it easier for the neurons to work so you can think sharper. They also help you store new information while retaining old information. Even one serving of fish in a week is enough to pack yourself with Omega-3 acids.

Popeye Was Smart?

The sailor must have been a genius, considering he consumed spinach in every episode. The leafy green is a great source of folate - a B vitamin. It maintains healthy brain circulation and promotes the formation of new neurotransmitters that are needed for thinking and learning. Your neurons will be safe from damage if you've been eating your greens, and folate helps to detoxify substances in the body. This ensures that your brain stays healthy.

Chana - The Brain Booster

Chickpeas, or chana as we call it hereis an excellent source of magnesium. The compound calms your brain's cell receptors allowing for faster transmission of messages. It even relaxes your blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the brain. As a result, magnesium lets your brain function with less effort and improves cognitive abilities.

Open Sesame

Sesame seeds aren't the most exciting things to consume, but make sure you include them in your diet! They're rich in zinc, which is highly nutritious to the brain. Apart from helping in learning, memory, and brain function, zinc is also part of the brain's defense system. It promotes immunity and maintains a healthy balance of trace metals in the brain. What that means is, you're less likely to fall sick or feel lethargic if you're filled with zinc.

Have A Tea Party

Freshly brewed black or green tea is filled with catechins. Ever felt drained, tired, and too lazy to think? It's because you're lacking catechins! They're responsible for keeping your mind sharp, fresh, and functioning properly. Mental fatigue won't exist if you've got enough catechins in your body. Have tea in the morning if you want to start the day feeling like a genius.

Now you know what needs to be done to have a healthy, active brain. Don't take this lightly, because you are literally what you eat. Deprive your brain of the right nourishment and it won't be able to help you when you need answers to life's questions, or any answers, for that matter.
